Happy Happy Birthday, to you! (Dad!)

This morning after getting the kids off to school I got to thinking of all the stuff I need to do today and errands I need to run which made me think about whether or not there would be enough funds in our bank account which made me figure out what the day & date is today. And that’s when I realized that today was, in fact, the 14th of December, my dad’s 57th birthday. I called right away (sorry I didn’t think of it before the kids left, maybe I’ll have them call this evening…) but no one picked up the phone, so I left a birthday song on the machine only for Dad to pick up just as I was finishing. I was going to add an awesome photo-homage here to dad, but our scanner seems not to be connected to the computer somehow and I can’t get ahold of Josh to help me figure out the problem, so I have to work with what’s already saved in the computer.scanold06.jpgCgilead.jpg11111`````` (1).jpgmgc8186.jpgcrop-walk-1984.jpgscanold11.jpgDowntheAisle.jpg100_0055.JPG100_0466.JPG100_1540.JPGThis last one was taken last year for the birthday boys, dad and his little buddy, trolley boy, 1st grandson Jacob.

Glenn Beck Christmas Show

Last evening I was given my first Christmas gift of the season from my sister Jennifer who drew my name in the Thrap Family Christmas Exchange.  Chad also drew Jason’s name so she got both of us tickets to see Glenn Beck’s Christmas Show in Des Moines.

It was better than I expected, and I knew I would love it.  It was barely if at all political.  It was all about his family which is borderline crazy, and his Christmas memories.  If you have had or have the opportunity to see his Christmas Show I reccommend it.

The premise of the stage show is to determine the true meaning of Christmas.  He starts with how Christmas is really a trilogy of holidays that are meant to be together and that Thanksgiving should truly be about prayer and giving thanks.  He goes through Music and Magic and Snow and Shopping and ends on the true meaning Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for all of us.  And most importantly the oppportunity He gives each of us to seek redemption for what we have done wrong or poor choices we have made.  The worst choice I ever made was to leave my wife, before she was my wife, with Jacob, before we knew he would be Jacob.  I have sought redemption for this decision and recieved it.

We all have problems and have made mistakes.  Seeking redemption and receiving it is an overwhelmingly good feeling.  I encourage all of you to dig into who you really are and seek that redemption.

I love you all and appreciate all that you do for me.  I love my wife and our four beautiful children and I love Jesus Christ.  I wish you all peace and joy, and thank you for taking the time to read of our family’s life here in our blog!!!

Sincerely,  JOSH

Big Birthday Weekend

This past weekend we celebrated Jacob and Elise’s birthdays. The Wheelers came over Friday afternoon and Josh came home about the same time that our kids were getting home from school. Immediately Kate and I took Elise and Audrey off for our special surprise girl night out which Elise opted for over a traditional party. DSC03838.JPGThe first stop was the Eye doctor’s office to pick up Elise’s new glasses and get them fitted. Once she could see it was on to our second stop, the Springwood movie theatre here in Ankeny. We took the girls to see Disney’s Enchanted (which Audrey had already seen with her dad, but they both loved it so much that it was actually their recommendation that we see it). I even splurged and got concessions, pop, popcorn, AND candy!DSC03853.JPG After the movie (which was really good, we all recommend it), I found some Christmas music on the radio and we drove to Grimes. Kate was taking all the pictures. Here’s the only one that she managed to get herself in. DSC03866.JPG We were at the stoplight just before entering the interstate at which time I told her to hold off on the pictures until we got where we were going because her flash was really bright and I didn’t want her to cause an accident behind us. ;) Our third stop was at Cutty’s in Grimes, Ia. DSC03873.JPG We drove through the huge lights display and stopped in at Santa’s Village for our free marshmellos.DSC03888.JPGDSC03900.JPG The girls really wanted to go ice skating, but it was really cold and we were all in skirts so we said that would have to wait for another time. As we drove through the light displays with the windows rolled down so the girls could see better, they decided it was a great time to try calling the woodland creatures to us with song, immitating Giselle from the Disney movie they’d just seen. Needless to say (and much to Kate’s delight I’m sure!), no animal responded to the girls pleading songs. So, with the lights behind us we decided it was finally time for dinner. I told Elise I wanted to take her somewhere that she could get a yummy dessert–she chose Cheddar’s. I got the girl’s hot cocoa to drink (and Kate got me a Cherry Coke so I wouldn’t choke ;) ) and once our waiter finally warmed up to us they played Elise a birthday tune on kazoos. DSC03924.JPGDSC03923.JPG After dinner we were all stuffed and exhausted so it was time to go home to bed. Overall I think (I hope) the girls had a wonderful experience and Elise enjoyed her birthday celebration. Somewhat early the next morning Josh and Chris took the four oldest kids (Cameron was supposed to go too, but he spent the morning from like 3 am on vomitting violently so he had to stay home with me.) to the 10th annual Christmas tree etc giveaway in Des Moines. 100_3226.JPG They did this last year as part of the Iowa BBQ Society and wanted to help out again. Although I guess it was really cold this year and after about 45 minutes or so the kids had to go back to sit in the van while Josh and Chris continued to help out in the cold. When they made it back home Cameron was feeling a little bit better and had finally managed to keep down a little liquid so we all went to the Panda Garden Chinese buffet where Jacob’s birthday party was to take place. He had a good turnout, everyone that he invited was able to come, and the food was pretty good! 100_3236.JPG100_3233.JPG100_3231.JPG 100_3252.JPG After the party, it started to snow again and we didn’t really have a plan for what to do next, Kate needed to work on a paper for school and the boys were kind of upset that they didn’t get to go to the movie like the girls did, so…we took the boys to see Enchanted. Well, we offered to take the boys to see Enchanted, but Michael and Cameron were having fun playing on the Gamecube and Audrey was watching them, so it ended up being Josh and Chris, Jacob, Elise and myself who went to see Enchanted. It snowed the entire time we were in the theatre. The other highlight of the weekend was watching Jim Gaffigan’s “Beyond the Pale” stand-up special. I never really cared for his Sprite commercials, but this show was hilarious. At one point Kate said she laughed so hard she almost vomitted! We watched it twice. “Hot Pocket!”

Another Day of Mothering

Actually, today celebrates my very first day of mothering 9 years ago. This morning as Josh was rushing the kids to get them ready for school, I told Jacob that exactly nine years ago I was rushing around getting ready to leave for the hospital. Two minutes after we’d sent the kids off to school (in the freezing rain) I heard them outside and went to see what was going on and why they weren’t at school. When I hollered out to them they replied that there was no one at the school. Ugh. Josh had assumed that since it hadn’t snowed like they were predicting on the news that there would be school as usual, and when he checked the school website it read “No School Weather Cancellation in Effect!” which he read as NO school weather CANCELLATION instead of NO SCHOOL, weather cancellation. So Jacob gets the day off for his birthday! And since there is no school, there will be no dance lessons tonight, so all the kids get a day off, and I get a LONG day with EVERYONE! But, Josh loves me and was able to collect work from his office that he could do on his laptop at home, so now he’s here too! The boys are playing with Jacob’s huge lego set that we gave him for his birthday this morning, and the girls are watching the Backyardigans with their dad. As soon as I finish up here we’re going to sit down with some hot cocoa and watch several Christmas movies while folding laundry. I’m trying really hard NOT to freak out about the fact that my baby is almost a decade old! I think its easier for me to get overexcited about with Jacob because since his birthday is in mid December it is just a matter of weeks before it is the next year! For example, this year (today) Jacob is turning 9, but in two and a half weeks it will be January of 2008, and in 2008 Jacob will be 10! Rationally I know that he won’t be 10 for another whole year, but its just easy to make that jump. Since I showed you all Elise’s baby picture, here is a picture of me taken right about this time 9 years ago, and a picture of our new little family taken in the afternoon. 100_2592.JPGtakeagoodlook.jpg

Day 3!

3 is kind of a small number, but when (as in this case) it means that Elise has gone 3 whole days without an accident it is a GOOD number. She started on her birthday and hasn’t had an accident since! Which means so much to me. Her self confidence is improving, the smell in the house is improving, the amount of laundry I get in a day is improving, mother/daughter relations (I hope) are improving. I’m very proud of you Elise and I appreciate your efforts to continue to stay clean and dry! I love you very much! I’m looking forward to our dressed-up girly surprise night!

This Week in 1995

In an earlier post I believe I mentioned that Josh and I had been reading some of our old journals recently. It just so happens that I have journal entries written this week in 1995. Just a couple of things for you to understand before reading further, in 1995 I was 18 and on my own living in Russia. Also, in Russia the bathroom is separated into at least two separate rooms, one with just a toilet and another with sink, mirror, etc. Sometimes the tub is in with the sink etc, but sometimes it also has its own little room. The toilet rooms especially can be difficult if you are at all claustrophobic!

Happy 7th Birthday to Our Baby Girl

Wow. My little girl is seven today! And while that seems to old to be true, it does seem like a VERY long time ago that she was born. In fact, she is such a grown young lady, it is difficult to remember her ever being this little: cute-girl.jpgcutegirl2.jpgWasn’t she a cutie?
I wish I’d taken a picture of her first thing this morning to show for comparisson, but hopefully she’ll manage to keep her nice new birthday outfit clean at school today and I can take her picture when she gets home and then I’ll update here. Anyway, I wish Elise to have a happy birthday and every happiness in life (with not too much sadness) and I’d like to thank all of you for the various important roles that you have played in our lives and the special relationships that you have formed with Elise.

$52 Socks!

Ok, so it’s not one pair of socks for $52, but still! This last weekend Josh and I went to Kohl’s. We had a gift certificate worth $20 that we’d been given for shopping on the day after Thanksgiving but it had to be used last week. Josh had given it to me and said I could get whatever I wanted, but when I went out on Wednesday I searched the whole store and didn’t find anything I felt I just had to have. Sure, there were several things I could’ve just gotten, I mean, it was free money, but you know, to me that is all the more reason to try to make the most of it. So I didn’t get anything and I gave the gift certificate back to Josh and told him he could get something with it. Anyway, by the weekend neither of us had gotten anything and the gift certificate was about to expire so Josh took me out to pick out some new socks (because a lot of mine have holes in the heels after YEARS of wear). He did not make it a condition of buying the new socks, but he hoped that of my own accord I would then throw out the holey socks. There were some favorites that I’ve been wearing since high school, but I did decide that they had probably past their prime and should be put to rest. Back at Kohl’s I couldn’t believe what people are apparently paying for socks these days! There were some that were priced at $12/pair! Unbelievable! Luckily, most of the socks were included in holiday sales and were marked 50-60% off so I was able to get a lot for our $20 and feel like I’d used the free money well. I got these NINE pairs of socks. 1201071156.jpg Their original retail prices would have added up to $52 plus tax! We had to pay $.87 in tax TOTAL.

For My Family

It has been brought to my attention that when Josh set up the subscribers list for our blog he didn’t have and therefore did not include my family’s email addresses. I’ve now gone through and if you received this email you have been successfully added to our subscriber list which will send you email updates when we post something new to our blog. If you would rather not get these emails you can unsubscribe or contact me and I will unsubscribe you. If you know of other family members not receiving this that should be included (for example, I’ve added mostly aunts and uncles, but not cousins because I don’t have their email addys) feel free to send them a link or send me their addresses. I hope we’ll be seeing comments from many of you!

Adjusting to the New Bed

So, it has been a bit of an adjustment for the girls to use their new bed–especially for Elena because it means she is free of the restraints of the crib. Thusly, bedtime has become a bit of a longer process and more of a challenge for Josh HOWEVER I am digging it because Elena now sleeps MUCH better in the mornings and doesn’t wake up at the first sounds of her siblings getting up. In fact, she is even sleeping in! This morning she slept the entire time the older kids were getting ready for school and she slept through me showering with lights, fans and water on, and then me rummaging through everything in my room continuing the search for the lost present In fact, she JUST woke up and it is almost 10 am! I am loving having a bit of time to myself in the mornings to get things done before she needs me to hold her–she has been a bit clingy lately.
