Given Grace!

This morning I did something that I have been more or less afraid to do since I got married, in fact, I haven’t done it since 1997. I got on a horse.

It’s Official!

I officially HATE this weather!!! I am so sick of Severe Thunderstorms and Tornado Warnings! Tonight, after waiting ALL week, my whole family was psyched to see the new episode of SYTYCD. We got about halfway through it before our DirecTV lost the signal, so not only did we miss the end, but we also lost the recording of the beginning so we have NOTHING!!! I know it’s ridiculous, but it’s practically THE highlight of our week and now we are SOOO let down! I almost want to cry.

FINALLY!

I have been bugging my boys since before school let out for the Summer to let me cut their hair. They would complain about getting hot and sweaty, but would refuse to buzz off their shaggy locks. Finally, yesterday, they let me have at it! So here are pictures of my little hairballs: 100_4211-2.jpg100_4206-2.jpg100_4220-2.jpg And here are their new mugshots! (Well, Jacob’s anyway, Cameron went on a sleepover as soon as his was finished–literally jumped off the toilet, picked up his sleeping bag and RAN!) Jacob is sporting some mild bedhead because I did not have the foresight to take the pictures last night when I had finished cutting. I’ll add Cameron asap. 100_4244.JPG100_4247.JPG100_4248.JPG100_4250.JPG This is just to give an idea of what his new hairstyle is capable of, we didn’t really take the time styling it, this is just a bit of water to get the effect for the photo. The mohawk does run the length of his head. And he does like it–he asked for it, in the pictures he’s just doing what he thinks is “being cool.”

Well, This Should Be No Surprise…

First Day “OUT” This Summer!

Yesterday was truly a beautiful day. And after my huge accomplishments the day before, I was ready to do more. And since the forecast is finally cooperating, I let the boys help me set up the backyard pool. We filled it in the morning and broke for lunch to let the water warm up ever so slightly, and just as I was starting to boil water for the kids’ Ramen noodles Josh called and invited us to come see the Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles in Altoona. my_photo2.jpg 100_4207.JPG The kids were each given a wienie whistle and got to pick out a “combo” to eat.100_4209.JPG 100_4211.JPG After lunch, we drove right back home to enjoy the afternoon in the pool with cousins. 100_4219.JPG 100_4214.JPG 100_4220.JPG 100_4217.JPG

Basement Dweller

Ok, I don’t have great photo visual aids like Kate does, but after literally MONTHS and MONTHS of stacking random crap in my basement and putting off actually dealing with it and putting it away the basement had become so out of control that I could barely get in and out of it to do the laundry (on the rare occasions that I actually bothered to try to do some laundry)! And after a particularly personally pathetic day yesterday, today, for whatever reason, I woke up with resolve to be productive. I spent almost ALL day in my basement. I did several loads of laundry and emptied four laundry baskets full of stuff! I also cleared all the random stuff from the piles on the floor, put away all the Halloween costumes, Easter baskets, and winter sweaters, unpacked from our travels at Christmastime, collected a garbage bag full of trash and filled 8 bags for the Goodwill! I sorted all of my greeting cards (now you may actually receive one!) and I found our immunization sheets! There is still a lot to do down there, but I did make a huge dent in the mess. I really should’ve had the forethought to take before and after pictures–they would have been very dramatic, but I guess when I started working on it, I didn’t really think I’d do so much! I know the basement is probably the least important room in the house, but I cannot even express how much lighter I feel now that it is under control!

Yes, They Did Ballet Too.

Elise is in green.

My First Venture on YouTube!

Did you notice Jacob’s shoe fly off? This was at the rehearsal, he managed to keep both shoes on during the actual recitals! And just in case you can’t immediately tell, Elise is the tall drink of water standing next to Jacob, wearing her glasses.

What A Weekend!

I know it’s not over just yet, we still have Father’s Day to celebrate tomorrow, but the really hectic part of our weekend is over and we have all survived. I’m talking primarily about the kids’ dance recitals. Unfortunately I don’t have more pictures, but I do have a short video that I would put here if I could figure out how–so I may work on that tomorrow sometime. Jacob and Elise have been quite the little troopers, shuffle-ball-changing their way through rehearsal Thursday, their first show Friday night, and their two matinee shows today! Their Clark grandparents, along with Aunt Sarah and Uncle Scott, made it over in time for the show on Friday. Clarks drove across 4-5 inches of water rushing over part of the road on the way to get here, and so they left early to ensure that they’d make it home before Dad’s trolley gig today, but the information they received online about which roads were still open was inaccurate and they ended up having to backtrack to 218 and go all the way down to Burlington and across into Illinois. So, a trip that normally takes about 2 and a half hours from here to Muscatine, took them 6 hours! Then today the Thrap grandparents along with Uncle Steven were to come over for the first afternoon show, and they also had to go across into Illinois and down to Burlington in order to get around the Cedar and Iowa rivers. They didn’t make it in time for the first show, so we took Cameron and Elena and Aunt Jenny joined us, then Thraps arrived just in time to see the last performance. Jacob and Elise did really well, and–I hope–had a lot of fun.
For those of you outside of Iowa, you may have heard about all of the tremendous flooding that we’re having. In most places it is already worse than the historic floods of ‘93. As I mentioned earlier, roads, highways, and interstates are closed and travel to some places is just impossible. The Des Moines area is one of the areas being hit pretty hard right now, and although we live incredibly close to the Saylorville Lake, our immediate area and our home are not being threatened by the floodwaters. We did have several days and or nights of seemingly endless severe thunderstorms. The lightning was intense! And on more than one occasion we had to bunker down in the basement and wait for the tornado sirens to end. But so far we are all still fine.

Labor Unions

What is the opinon of Unions ? I think that they have run their course. On the Belton Hy-Vee we were picketed by the Painters Union, because the Painter doing the inside painting Hy-Vee Weitz and R.B. painting are non union contractors. Color Inc a Union Contractor is painting the exterior of the store. So the picket made it so that the union workers could not work and the non union workers who were being disputed could? So people pay money to an organization to protect their jobs and wages, but the organization makes it so they don’t get paid to make a point. Do they ever win? The part that really gets me is that a union painter is going to be working on the exterior of the building. Did anyone ever tell them that you can’t always win? Someone has to lose.
